Abstract
The softening point of a resin obtained from a steam-cracked naphtha is increased by polymerizing the resin in a solution in an inert solvent with a minor proportion by weight of a C4-C6 conjugated di-olefine in the presence of a FriedelCrafts catalyst. The resin may be obtained from the steam-cracked naphtha, e.g. with a boiling range of 30-200 DEG C., or 42 DEG to 170 DEG C. and containing for example 28% aromatics, 27% olefine and 45% unsaturates, by polymerizing with a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. Butadiene- 1,3, cyclopentadiene and isoprene may be used, in solvents such as benzene or n-hexane, at temperatures below the diolefine boiling point, under inert gas, and the products are quenched e.g. with an 0,2% aqueous solution of an alkoxylated alkylated phenol, vacuum-stripped and dried.
