Abstract

864,132. Hydrocarbon resins. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 10, 1959 [July 2, 1958], No. 21171/58. Addition to 850,363. Class 2(6). A hydrocarbon resin derived from a coal tar or a cracked petroleum fraction, which fraction has a boiling range lying between 150‹ and 210‹C., and contains components such as indene and styrene, is chemically modified with para- or meta-diisopropenyl benzene by copolymerizing the fraction with the isopropenyl benzene or by polymerizing the isopropenyl benzene in the presence of preformed hydrocarbon resin. Catalysts such as Friedel-Crafts catalysts, e.g. Al Cl 3 , aluminium chloride/acetone complex, boron trifluoride/acetic acid complex, or sulphuric acid may be used and the polymerization may take place in a solvent such as benzene and the reactants may be added incrementally.
