Abstract
937,072. Partially esterified cation-exchange resins. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Oct. 19, 1959 [Oct. 20, 1958], No. 35290/59. Addition to 849,965. Classes 2(5) and 2(6) [Also in Group IV(b)] Cation-exchange resins containing sulphonic acid groups are partially esterified with a mercapto-alcohol such as a mercapto-ethanol, -propanol, or -butanol. The partially-esterified resins have use as catalysts in the production of bisphenols (Group IV(b)). Specified resins are:- sulphonated styrene-divinyl benzene resins, sulphonated cross-linked polystyrene resins, phenol-formaldehyde sulphonic acid resins, and benzene-formaldehyde sulphonic acid resins. In an example, a sulphonated cross-linked polystyrene resin is dried at 75‹ to 85‹C.; and drying is then completed by azeotropic distillation of the residual water with n-heptane. An amount of beta-mercapto ethanol sufficient to esterify 20 % of the sulphonic groups of the resin is added dropwise, and the water of reaction is collected in the reflux trap. The resin is filtered, washed with n-heptane, and dried.
