Abstract

1381398 Purification and recovery of phenols UNION CARBIDE CORP 10 March 1972 [11 March 1971] 11204/72 Heading C2C A process for the purification and recovery of a phenol from a substantially anhydrous mixture containing said compound and carbonyl containing impurities comprises contacting said mixture with a solid acidic ion-exchange resin which is insoluble in said mixture and which has pendant acid groups chemically bonded thereto to convert carbonyl containing impurities to products having boiling-points higher than the boiling-point of said phenol and distilling the phenol therefrom. Suitable ion-exchange resins have skeletons with pendant acid groups such as phosphoric, phosphonic, sulphuric or sulphonic chemically bonded thereto. Highly desirable ion-exchange resins are sulphonated styrene-divinyl benzene resins, phenol-formaldehyde-sulphonic acid resins, sulphonated cross-linked styrene resins and benzene-formaldehyde sulphonic acid resins. Generally the temperature of the anhydrous mixture while in contact with the ion-exchange resin is about 50‹ to about 185‹ C. The contact between the mixture and the resin may be continuous or batchwise.
