Abstract
1394454 Phenol BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 4 May 1973 [1 June 1972] 25598/72 Heading C2C A process for the purification of phenol obtained from the acid cleavage of cumene hydroperoxide and containing water-soluble colour-forming impurities boiling from 152‹ to 182‹ C. comprises subjecting the phenol which has been freed from acetone, water, mesityl oxide, cumene and methyl styrene to a distillation in which the water-soluble colourforming impurities are maintained within a substantially anhydrous part of the column under distillation conditions for a period so as to concentrate the impurities and at least partially to decompose them to mesityl oxidecontaining decomposition products, removing a base product comprising phenols free from watersoluble colour-forming impurities boiling from 152‹ to 182‹ C. and an overhead fraction containing lower-boiling decomposition products in the presence or absence of the said impurities and thereafter separating the phenol from the higher boiling decomposition and cleavage products. An example is furnished.
