Abstract
1342835 - Preparation of dihydric phenols SIGNAL CHEMICAL CO 19 April 1971 [5 March 1970 (2)] 22738/71 Heading C2C In a process for producing a dihydric phenol by the re-arrangement of a dialkylbenzenedihydroperoxide wherein a ketone is a byproduct of the re-arrangement, the ketone is separated from the dihydric phenol product by feeding a neutralized re-arrangement effluent stream, a hydrocarbon solvent and an aqueous feed to a distillation column; supplying distillation heat to the fluid in the lower section of the column; removing a stream containing the ketone from the upper section of the column; removing bottoms comprising an aqueous phase and a hydrocarbon phase from the column; separating the hydrocarbon phase from the aqueous phase and recovering from the latter solid dihydric phenol product. The invention is described by reference to flow diagrams and illustrated by the preparation of resorcinol and hydroquinone.
