Abstract

1412645 Purifying acetone BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 13 Sept 1973 [4 Oct 1972] 45682/72 Heading C2C A process for the purification of acetone containing acetaldehyde produced by the acid catalysed cleavage of cumene hydroperoxide comprises distilling a mixture containing acetone and acetaldehyde in a first column to remove acetaldehyde overhead and in the presence of sufficient alkali to effect condensation of residual acetaldehyde to form aldol and removing acetone containing aldol as base product, further distilling the base product in a second column to remove not more than about 99% of the acetone as a substantially pure overhead distillate, distilling at least part of the base product from the second column in a third column under such conditions that the distillate comprises the residual acetone and any acetaldehyde arising from the decomposition of aldol. Preferably, the distillate from the third column is recycled either to the first column wherein acetaldehyde is removed overhead or to the acid catalysed cleavage of cumene hydroperoxide or to the products of said acid catalysed cleavage of cumene hydroperoxide. Preferably also the acetone containing acetaldehyde is fed to an intermediate point in the first column and a major portion of the alkali is fed to said column at a point below the feed point of said acetone containing acetaldehyde mixture whilst the remaining minor portion of the alkali is fed above the feed point of the acetone containing acetaldehyde mixture.
