Abstract
Fusible homopolymers of meta- or paradiisopropenyl benzene are made having reduced viscosities of at least 0,3, determined at 25 DEG C. using a 2% solution in xylene. The polymer is linear and non cross-linked and possesses terminal isopropenyl groups. The polymerization may be carried out in bulk or in a solvent such as tetrachloroethane and in the presence of a catalyst such as sulphuric acid, or metal halides such as Friedel-Crafts catalysts, e.g. borontrifluoride or stannic chloride. The polymer may also be obtained from low molecular weight material by merely heating in the presence of a catalyst or by reacting with further monomer.
