Abstract

The Specification describes the preparation of homopolymers of p-and m-diisopropenyl benzene and copolymers which contain at least 5% of p- or mdiisopropenyl benzene. The comonomer may be styrene, a -methyl styrene, vinyl toluene, a -pinene, turpentine, ethylene, butene-1, acenaphthylene, butadiene, cycolpentadiene, acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile, a fluoroethylene, a chlorfluoroethylene, maleic anhydride, linoleic acid, tung oil, a drying oil modified alkyd, a glycidyl ester of an unsaturated acid or an unsaturated glycidyl ether, e.g. allyl glycidyl ether and the p- and misomers may copolymerized together. The polymerization may be by the bulk, solution, emulsion or suspension techniques, e.g. in benzene, toluene or xylene solution, and a catalyst may be used such as benzoyl or di-t-butyl peroxide or t-butyl hydroperoxide, azo bis-isobutyric nitrile, aluminium chloride, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, boron fluoride/acetic acid complex or a metal alkyl e.g. aluminium triethyl or complexes containing a metal alkyl. The polymerization reaction components may be added in stages and the polymerization may be carried out in the presence also of diethyl ether in the presence of preformed polymer or of an alkyd resin or its components. The polymers may be used as moulding resins and in coating compositions, adhesives, printing inks and lubricating oils and may be blended with aromatic and paraffinic hydrocarbon solvents, higher ketones, alcohols and esters, chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents, white spirit and linseed oil, rosin, ester gum, hydrocarbon resins, bitumens, natural and synthetic waxes, epoxide resins, oil modified alkyd resins, urea or melamine formaldhyde resins, vegetable drying oils, stand oils, lubricating oils and plasticizers such as mineral oils, phthalate esters, chlorinated rubbers and phenol. In an example a copolymer was made by polymerizing diisopropenyl benzene in the presence of a modified alkyd resin formed from dehydrated castor oil monoglyceride, glycerol, phthalic anhydride, dipentene and a small quantity of phenolic resin.
