Abstract

A stable dispersion of a polar addition polymer in a relatively non-polar organic liquid is made by polymerizing a polar monomer with a peroxide catalyst in solution in the organic liquid in the presence of a degraded rubber having a reduced viscosity of from 0.2 to 0.5 units, thereby forming a graft or block copolymer of the monomer and the rubber which stabilizes the dispersion. Specified monomers are methyl butyl and beta-ethoxyethyl methacrylates, which may be used alone, or in admixture with one another or with other monomers such as acrylic and methacrylic acids, dimethyl itaconate, diethyl maleate and maleic anhydride. The resulting dispersions may be plasticized with phthalate and phosphate ester plasticizers and used as coating compositions. The examples describe the polymerization of methyl methacrylate and mixtures thereof with methacrylic acid and butyl methacrylate in a mineral spirits medium in the presence of benzoyl peroxide.
