Abstract

1,052,241. Polymer dispersions; unsaturated polymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES. May 29, 1963 [June 22, 1962], No. 24216/62. Addition to 941,305. Headings C3G. C3P and C3R. Stable dispersions of synthetic polymers in organic liquids are made by polymerizing ethylenic monomer in an organic liquid which is a solvent for the monomer but not for the resulting polymer and which contains a graft copolymer made by graft polymerizing an ethylenic monomer with a polymer which contains a copolymerizable unsaturated group, the grafted chain being of different polarity from that of the preformed polymer chain, one chain of the graft copolymer being solvated by the organic liquid and the other chain being not solvated by the organic liquid and becoming associated with the disperse polymer, the molecular weight of the non-solvated chain being at least 2000 and 0À1-10 times the molecular weight of the solvated chain which is at least 5000. Preferably the graft copolymer precursor containing unsaturated groups is dissolved in an appropriate organic solvent, and the polymer dispersion-forming monomer is then polymerized in the solution of the precursor polymer, thereby simultaneously forming the graft copolymer and the dispersed polymer. Alternatively, the grafting monomer and the polymer dispersion-forming monomer, may be different. Exemplified unsaturated precursor polymers are made by reacting: ( 1 ) methacrylyl chloride with a lauryl methacrylatepropylene glycol monomethacrylate, (2 and 3) methacrylic acid with a lauryl methacrylateglycidyl methacrylate copolymers, (4 and 5) maleic anhydride and monomethyl itaconate with a tert. butyl methacrylate-propylene glycol monomethacrylate copolymer, (6) allylamine with a tert. butyl methacrylate-methacrylyl chloride copolymer, (7) allyl isocyanate with a tert. butyl methacrylate-ethylene glycol monomethyacrylate copolymer, (8) allyl glycidyl ether with a tert. butyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer, (9) methacrylic acid with a tert. butyl methacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer, (10) ethyl acrylate with an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymer, (11 and 12) acrylic acid with 2-ethylhexyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate and cetyl methacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymers, (13) ethyl acrylate with a vinyl toluene-vinyl acetate copolymer, (14) methacrylyl chloride and poly (propylene glycol monomethacrylate), (15) methacrylic acid and a methylmethacrylate. glycidyl methacrylate copolymer, (16) vinyl chloride and a hydrolysed vinyl toluene-vinyl acetate copolymer, (17) methacrylic acid and a lauryl methacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer, (18) acrylic acid and a lauryl methacrylate-n-octyl methacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer, (19 and 20) glycidyl methacrylate and lauryl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymers, and (21) methacrylic acid and a methyl methacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer. The precursor polymers are grafted with unsaturated monomers either prior to or during the formation of polymer dispersions by the polymerization in organic liquids of (22 and 23) methyl methacrylate, ethoxyethyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid, (24, 30, 35, 38, 39 and 53) methyl methacrylate, (25, 28, 37, 52, 54, 55 and 58) methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid, (26) methyl and n-butyl methacrylates, (29) acrylonitrile, ethoxyethyl methacrylate and acrylic acid, (31) acrylic acid and acrylonitrile, (32) hydroxyethyl and hydroxypropyl methacrylates and methacrylic acid, (33) acrylonitrile and n-butyl methacrylate, (34, 40-45 and 65) vinyl chloride, (36) methyl methacrylate, methacrylic acid and ethyl acrylate, (46) vinylidene chloride and methyl acrylate, (47 and 62) vinyl acetate, (48) vinyl chloroacetate, (49 and 50) styrene, (51) styrene, ethyl acrylate and acrylonitrile, (56) acrylonitrile, (57) acrylic acid, (59) methyl methacrylate, ethoxthyl acrylate and acryileyc acid, (60) vinyl stearate, acrylonitrile and acrylamide, (61) styrene and acrylonitrile, (63) vinyl acetate and monomethyl maleate, and (64) vinyl chloroacetate and monomethyl maleate.
