Abstract

1300387 Polymerizable cold-setting compositions BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd and CMW LABORATORIES Ltd 13 Feb 1970 [14 Feb 1969] 8203/69 Heading C3P A liquid composition suitable for use as one part of a cold-setting two-part synthetic resin composition comprises an alkyl methacrylate monomer, a polymerization inhibitor, an organic acid that is copolymerizable with the methacrylate monomer, a plasticizer and a polymerization promoter, the composition being free of polymerization initiator. Preferred components are methyl methacrylate (monomer), hydroquinone, hydroquinone monomethyl ether or 2,4 - dimethyl - 6 - t - butylphenol (inhibitor), methacrylic acid (comonomer), dialkyl phthalates (plasticizer) and dimethyl-p-toluidine (promoter). The composition is used in conjunction with a powder composition as a coldsetting synthetic resin composition, the powder composition comprising a solid alkyl methacrylate polymer, e.g. methyl methacrylate bead polymer, an inorganic filler, e.g. marble flour (calcium carbonate) or calcium sulphate and a polymerization initiator, e.g. benzoyl peroxide. In certain cases, the acid comonomer can be omitted from the liquid part of the cold-setting compositions. A solid vinyl polymer containing carboxylic acid groups, e.g. a copolymer of vinyl chloride and/or vinyl acetate with maleic acid, may be included in the powder composition. The cold-setting compositions are particularly useful in jointing armoured and other electric cables having PVC sheaths.
