Abstract

1,261,427. Polymerization process. ROHM G.m.b.H. 26 Sept., 1969 [26 Sept., 1968], No. 47573/69. Heading C3P. A monomer material comprising (a) at least one monomer selected from acrylonitrile and acrylate and methacrylate esters and, optionally, (b) at least one further copolymerizable monomer, the said monomer material comprising at least 50% by weight of component (a), is polymerized in the presence of 0À005-0À1% (based on the weight of the monomer material) of at least one compound containing a 6-membered ring having either two non-conjugated endocyclic carbon-carbon double bonds or two non-conjugated carbon-carbon double bonds, one of which is endocyclic and the other exocyclic (i.e. one carbon atom of the double bond is a member of the 6-membered ring and the other is outside the ring), the said compound serving to reduce gelling of the polymerization mixture. Component (a) may be selected from acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate and component (b) may be styrene and/or vinyl acetate. Suitable gel-reducing agents include 1,4-cyclo-hexadiene, 1-methyl-1,4- cyclohexadiene, γ-terpinene, #-terpinene and terpinolene. Polymerization is generally effected in 'the presence of an initiator such as lauroyl peroxide or azodiisobutyronitrile. A mercaptan chain transfer agent, e.g. 2-ethyl hexyl thioglycolate, can also be present, if desired.
