Abstract

1,144,755. Pressure-sensitive adhesive copolymers. BEIERSDORF A.G. 19 May, 1966 [19 May, 1965], No. 22372/66. Headings C3B and C3P. [Also in Division B2] Pressure-sensitive adhesive copolymers which comprise (a) 100 parts by weight of an alkyl acrylate whose alkyl group has 4-10 carbon atoms, or of a mixture of alkyl acrylates whose alkyl groups have 1-14 carbon atoms but at least half by weight of which is provided by one or more acrylates with alkyl groups of 4 or more carbon atoms, with (b) 0À25 to 11 parts by weight of one or more ethylenically unsaturated epoxy monomers, and, optionally, (c) a proportion of an acid or anhydride monomer or diketene, and, optionally, (d) a minor proportion of a monomer selected from itaconic esters, amides of acrylic and methacrylic acid, vinyl ethers and vinyl esters, are prepared by polymerizing the corresponding monomers in solution in the presence of a catalyst such as dibenzoyl peroxide or azodiisobutyronitrile, or in emulsion with a redox catalyst (unspecified). The epoxy monomer may be glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate or allyl glycidyl ether. Optional component (c) may, besides diketene, be maleic anhydride or acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic or itaconic acid. For application in adhesive tapes or films the copolymers are combined with 0À05 to 5%, by weight of the copolymer, of a curing catalyst, e.g. zinc chloride, magnesium chloride, monosalts of maleic acid with a tertiary amine, alkyl acid phosphates, p-toluene-sulphonic acid, oxalic acid, maleic acid and tertiary amines. After application to a suitable backing, the adhesive is dried and cured at elevated temperature.
