Abstract
N-Vinylpyrrolidinone polymers which contain N - vinyl - 2 - pyrrolidinone units or such compound substituted in the ring by alkyl groups and which increase the viscosity of water when dissolved or dispersed therein, are upgraded, i.e. their average molecular weight is increased, by treatment in water with hydrogen peroxide so as to produce a polymer of K value greater than that of the starting polymer. Treatment may be at 50-90 DEG C. and the starting polymer may contain not more than 0.5% of residual monomer which may be polymerized by the treatment. 0.1-1% of hydrogen peroxide may be used together with an aqueous solution of (e.g. 0.1-1% ammonia). The product may be a gel. The K value of the starting polymer may be 30-70. The polymer may be a homopolymer of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone or a copolymer containing at least 50% of N-vinyl-pyrrolidinone, and methyl acrylate or methacrylate, acrylic or methacrylic acid, acrylamide, ethyl acrylate or vinyl acetate.
