Abstract

Latex type polymer in which the particles consist of (1) a first stage of crosslinked elastomeric emulsion polymer of methyl acrylate and/or ethyl acrylate opt. contng. a minor amount of lower alkoxyor cyanoethyl acrylate, acrylamide, lower hydroxy alkyl (meth) acrylate (meth)acrylic acid or acrylonitrile; (2) a second stage formed by emulsion polymerisation directly on the first stage of a mixture of is not 25% of one of the monomers given and is not >75% of a C1-4 alkyl methacrylate and (3) a final stage formed by emulsion polymerisation onto the other stages of a monomer mixture of is not 90 wt.% of a C1-4 alkyl methacrylate, the rest being at least one of C1-8 alkyl acrylate, lower alkoxy acrylate, cyanoethyl acrylate, acrylamide, lower hydroxy alkyl (meth)acrylate, (meth)acrylic acid or acrylonitrile. Useful as protective coatings e.g. on polystyrene, having improved resistance to solvents and soiling. Also useful raised with other resins to improve impact resistance.
