Abstract

1445844 Polymerizing unsaturated polyesters BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 22 April 1974 [8 May 1973] 21884/73 Heading C3P A curable moulding composition comprising an unsaturated polyester and a copolymerizable monomer and also a deleterious additive (defined below), uses as an initiator, 0À01 to 0À5 wt. per cent based on the total composition, of a free radical forming azo compound, the combined amount of polyester and monomer being from 20-35 wt. per cent based on the total weight of the composition. A deleterious additive is any additive whose presence in the composition reduces the power of a peroxide initiator to cure the composition, examples being fire retardants, viscosity modifiers, mould release agents, dyes and pigments. Polymerization inhibitors are excluded. Not all such additives are deleterious but whether a specific additive is or not, can be easily determined. Examples of specific azo initiators are 2,2<SP>1</SP>- azobis - (2,4 - dimethyl valeronitrile), 2,2<SP>1</SP>- azobis - (2,4,4 - trimethyl valeronitrile), 2,2<SP>1</SP>- azobis - (2,4 - dimethyl - 4 - methoxy valeronitrile), 1,1 - azobis - (cyclo - octane carbonitrile), 2,2<SP>1</SP> - azobis - (isobutyronitrile) and azo-1-cyanocyclohexane.
