Abstract

Process for the preparation of polymeric compositions and the like and, more particularly, of a multiphase polymer, produced sequentially, characterized in that it comprises: (A) polymerize a first elastomeric portion having a glass state transition temperature of less than 10ºC from a monomer mixture comprising at least about 50 weight percent of one or more alkyl or aralkyl acrylates, about 0, 05 to 5.0 weight percent of one or more cross-link monomers, approximately 0.05 to 5.0 weight percent of one or more graft-forming monomers, capable of bonding the elastomeric phase to the defined rigid phase subsequently, 0 to about 10.0 percent by weight of hydrophilic or non-hydrophilic monomer that is converted to mere hydrophilic in the elastomeric portion, the remainder of said monomer mixture being composed of one or more other ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable monomers; and (B) polymerize a final, thermoplastic and rigid portion, in the presence of said elastomeric portion, from a monomeric mixture comprising at least about 50 weight percent of alkyl methacrylate, said elastomeric portion and said thermoplastic portion having a minimum bond level of about 20 percent.
