760,344. Monomer/polymer mixtures; dental mouldings. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AKT.-GES. Dec. 7, 1953 [Dec. 6, 1952], No. 33987/53. Class 2 (6). Moulded bodies, e.g. dental prostheses, are made by polymerizing in a mould a plastic doughy mixture comprising finely-divided polymers of one or more monomers containing one or more )C=C( groups and 30 per cent by weight or less, of a liquid monomer or partially polymerized monomer, the finely-divided polymers consisting of a major proportion of at least one polymer (A) which is of such a chemical composition and degree of fineness that it takes up its portion of the monomer or partial polymer in more than 8 minutes and a minor proportion of at least one other polymer (B) which has a different chemical composition and takes up its portion of the polymerizable liquid in less than 2 minutes. The liquid monomer or partial polymer may be methyl methacrylate, which may contain minor amounts of compounds containing more than one polymerizable double bond. Polymer (A) may be polymethyl methacrylate, and copolymers of methyl methacrylate and dodecyl methacrylate and/or acrylonitrile and/or divinyl benzene. Polymer (B) may be a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and acrylates, a copolymer of methyl acrylate and butadiene, polyvinyl chloride, or afterchlorinated polyvinyl chloride. The polymeric materials may contain dyestuffs, pigments, and plasticizers and the polymerization effected in the presence of catalysts such as benzoyl peroxide, sulphinic acid, and mixtures of peroxides, sulphinic acid and amines.
