Abstract

Mouldable materials are prepared by polymerizing mixtures comprising at least two polymerizable monomeric materials, each of which when fully polymerized alone yields a thermoset synthetic resin, to an intermediate stage under conditions directly producing from the mixture a partially polymerized mass which is sufficiently stable and rigid to be stored and handled, but which can be shaped under heat and pressure, the constituents, the proportions thereof and the polymerization conditions being such that the partially polymerized material has the stated properties and can be further polymerized to an infusible form. Preferably the mixtures contain at least one polymerizable material which when fully polymerized alone yields a thermoplastic synthetic resin. Specified thermoset resin producing monomers are allyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and homologous glycol dimethacrylates, methacrylic anhydride, diallyl maleate, triallyl aconitate triallyl cyanurate, diethylene glycol bis (allyl carbonate) and divinyl benzene. Specified thermoplastic resin producing monomers are vinyl acetate, allyl acetate, styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylic acid, and methyl and homologous alkyl methacrylates. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide and di-tert. butyl peroxide. When polymerization to the infusible stage is to be catalysed by ultra-violet light benzoin type catalysts may be added. Inhibitors, e.g. hydroquinone, 2,5-di-tert. butyl hydroquinone, di beta naphthol and tert. butyl catechol may be added to prevent premature cross-linking. The monomer mixtures may be partially prepolymerized before pouring into moulds and heating to complete polymerization to the intermediate stage. The formation of the desired intermediate product may be detected by continuously measuring a physical property, e.g. power factor or dielectric constant, of the reaction mixture as described in Specification 818,472. Fibres, fillers and pigments may be added to the polymerizable mixtures before solidification. The intermediate products may be machined or softened by heating and shaped, and then cured to infusible form by further heating. Examples describe the polymerization of mixtures comprising (1), (4) and (5) diethylene glycol bis (allyl carbonate), triallyl cyanurate and methyl methacrylate; (2), (7) and (9) allyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate and triallyl cyanurate; (3) diethylene glycol bis (allyl carbonate), triallyl cyanurate, methyl methacrylate and n-butyl methacrylate; (6) allyl methacrylate, diallyl maleate and methyl methacrylate; and (8) triallyl aconitate and allyl methacrylate.
