Abstract

A relief image is produced by polymerizing to a rigid article a liquid polymerizable ethenoid composition, preferably containing a polymerization catalyst, by means of heat and/or light rays passed through a suitable image bearing transparency, and subsequently developing the latent image produced by heat or treatment with a solvent for the polymerized composition. The degree of polymerization in the rigid polymer varies according to the intensity of light to which it is subjected, and the variation is converted into a surface relief, (1) by heating (causing the under-polymerized material to shrink) or (2) treatment with a solvent with consequent preferential dissolution of the underpolymerized material. By a liquid polymerizable ethenoid composition is intended a monomer containing one or more CH2=C< groups or a mixture of such monomers, or a solution in such monomers of one or more polymers or partial polymers of such monomers. Specified are methyl acrylate, methacrylate and chloracrylate, vinyl acetate and styrene with or without dyes, pigments, fillers, plasticizers and inhibitors. Catalysts specified are benzoyl and lauroyl peroxides, benzoin and diacetyl. Solvents mentioned for the development of the relief image are an 80 : 20 mixture of methyl and n-butyl alcohol and 10 per cent solution of caustic soda.
