Abstract

Cast synthetic resins are made by introducing into a mould a mixture of 35 to 54 parts by volume of a solid "ethenoid" polymer (which will pass a 20-mesh screen and be retained on a 50-mesh screen) and 65 to 46 parts of a liquid "ethenoid" monomer which is a solvent for the polymer, the mixture having a viscosity within a specified range, maintaining the mixture in the mould under non-polymerizing conditions until it is partially homogenized and then polymerizing. The "ethenoid" compounds include only acrylic acid, its derivatives and homologues, styrene and its derivatives and vinyl esters. The term liquid monomer includes liquid partial polymers as well as completely unpolymerized monomer. The polymer used is preferably one prepared by granular polymerization, but comminuted bulk cast polymers may be used. Lubricants, plasticizers, colouring materials and polymerization catalysts may be present. Examples are given of the polymerization of mixtures of methyl methacrylate monomer and polymer (1) alone, and together with (2) methacrylic anhydride, or (3) glycol dimethacrylate monomer, or (4) monomeric styrene.
