Abstract

A porous, granular ion-exchange resin is prepared by introducing ion-exchange groups into a granular, hydrophobic polymer prepared by polymerisation of a mixture of monomers comprising a compound having one double bond and a compound having two or more double bonds, the polymerisation being effected with the monomers in solution in an organic liquid that is a solvent for the monomers but is precipitant for the polymer. Preferably the solution of monomers is dispersed in an inert suspension medium, e.g. water containing polyvinyl alcohol. The solvent is subsequently removed from the polymer beads, e.g. by heating, and a product which is macroporous (similar to a sponge) is obtained. Monomers specified are styrene, ethyl and methyl styrenes, vinyl naphthalene and anthracene; ethylene dimethacrylate, vinyl acrylate, vinyl methacrylate, divinyl oxalate, divinyl benzene, divinyl ketone, styryl vinyl ketone, and trivinyl benzene. The solvent may be hexane, heptane, isopropanol, butanol, octanol, nitromethane, dioctyl sebacate, petroleum ether or petroleum naphtha. Polymerisation may be caused by heating or by the use of catalysts such as azobisisobutyronitrile or benzoyl peroxide. Ion-exchange groups specified are sulphonic acid, amino and quaternary ammonium groups.ALSO:A porous, granular ion-exchange resin is prepared by introducing ion-exchange groups into a granular, hydrophobic polymer prepared by polymerization of a mixture of monomers comprising a compound having one double bond and a compound having two or more double bonds.
