Abstract

Shaped optical elements or preforms having an axis of reference such that the thickness of the element measured parallel to said axis at all points in the element at a given distance from said axis is substantially constant are made by subjecting a transparent photopolymerizable liquid monomeric compound possessing the group >C=C< in the molecule, or a liquid partial polymer derived therefrom to the polymerizing action of light in a mould of the desired shape until a solid body is formed, the average intensity of light falling upon the monomeric compound or partial polymer being such that Q/t is constant, Q being the average quantity of light falling per unit time per unit area, measured at right angles to the direction of the incident light, upon the monomeric compound or partial polymer, and t being the thickness of the material undergoing polymerization, measured in the direction of the incident light. The light control is obtained by interposing between the mould a screen from which portions calculated mathematically in accordance with the above requirement have been cut or a suitable prepared photographic filter or a pigmented transparent screen. The screen and/or the mould may be rotated. The monomeric compounds specified are acrylic and methacrylic acids, methyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl methacrylate, 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate, styrene, vinyl acetate, allyl methacrylate and diallyl fumarate. Mixtures of two or more of the monomeric compounds may be used. The composition preferably comprises a polymeric material of low molecular weight dissolved in the monomeric compound or compounds. The term "light" means all light from infra-red to ultra-violet. The photo-polymerization catalysts specified are glycollic aldehyde, benzoin, acetoin, butyroin, 3-hydroxy-4-methyl-pentanone-2, toluin, tert.-butylbenzoin, 12-hydroxy-13-ketotetracosane, o- and p-tert.-butyltoluin, benzoin methyl ether, benzoin ethyl ether, benzoin propyl ether, pivaloin ethyl ether, anisoin methyl ether, diacetyl, pentanedione-2,3; octanedione-2,3; 1-phenyl butanedione-1,2; benzil; 2,2-dimethyl-4-phenylbutanedione-3,4; glyoxal, phenyl-glyoxal, diphenyl triketone; 1,2-cyclohexanedione, alpha, alpha1-azodiisobutyronitrile, alpha, alpha1-azobis-(alpha-gamma-dimethylvaleronitrile); dimethyl and diethyl alpha, alpha1-azodiisobutyrates; alpha, alpha1-azo-bis-(alpha-methyl- or ethylbutyronitrile); and alpha, alpha1-azodiisobutyro-carbonamide. The photopolymerization catalysts may be used in conjunction with a peroxide catalyst such as benzoyl, lauryl, acetyl, butyroyl, succinyl peroxides and ascaridole.
