Abstract

1,177,425. Bitumen/polymer compositions. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 3 Aug., 1967 [10 Aug., 1966 (2); 19 Dec., 1966], No. 35660/67. Headings C3N and C3P. Bitumen compositions are made by partially polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers and then completing the polymerization in (a) molten bitumen, (b) a hydrocarbon liquid, or when the product of the polymerization is not a petroleum resin, in (c) a petroleum resin which is molten or dissolved in a solvent, the products of (b) and (c) being added to molten bitumen. The monomers may be vinyl acetate and a C 8-18 fumarate or acrylate, or a C 8-18 , lauryl, butyl or methyl methacrylate; vinyl pyrrolidone, glycol dimethacrylate or diethylamino ethyl methacrylate. In examples the monomers were polymerized using azodiisobutyronitrile or tert. butyl perbenzoate as catalysts. The bitumen may be straight road asphalt or a straight, fluxed, oxidized or blown bitumen. The liquid hydrocarbon may be a liquid petroleum distillate or extract.
