Abstract

Mixtures of polymerizable materials, at least one of which when fully polymerized forms a thermoplastic resin and another of which is diethylene glycol bis (allyl carbonate), are polymerized to form sheets or blocks which are sufficiently rigid and stable to be handled and worked but which are still sufficiently thermoplastic to be shaped under heat and pressure and can be converted to infusible fully polymerized substances. Specified thermoplastic resin-forming materials are methyl and higher alkyl methacrylates, methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl acetate and allyl acetate. The mixtures may contain other materials which yield thermoset resins, e.g. triallyl cyanurate and methacrylic anhydride, and optionally fibres, fillers and pigments. Peroxy catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, and, where polymerization to the infusible state in the presence of ultra-violet light is contemplated, benzoin-type catalysts may be added. Preferably some physical property, e.g. power factor or refractive index, of the ideal intermediate material is measured and subsequent mixtures polymerized to give the corresponding value. Polymerization to the infusible state may be effected by highenergy radiation, e.g. by exposing to a cobalt 60 source. Partial prepolymerization of the thermoplastic resin-forming monomers or the thermoset resin-forming monomers may be effected. In examples the copolymerization of ethylene glycol bis-(allyl carbonate) with (II, IV and V) triallyl cyanurate and methyl methacrylate and (III) triallyl cyanurate, methyl methacrylate and n-butyl methacrylate is described. Specification 738,487 is referred to.
