Abstract

An adhesive for bonding bodies of plasticized polyvinyl halide-containing resins comprises 14 to 5 parts of an unplasticized polymer, or copolymer with another monomer, of a vinyl or vinylidene group-containing monomer, dissolved in 86 to 95 parts of a liquid vinyl or vinylidene group-containing monomer or partial polymer free from unpolymerizable constituents other than catalysts, and polymerizable to a resin. Specified solvents for vinyl acetate polymers and copolymers and partially polymerized styrene are styrene and esters of acrylic acid and its homologues, e.g. methyl methacrylate and for polyvinyl chloride, polymethyl methacrylate and polystyrene, their corresponding liquid monomers. Preferably, when the dissolved polymer has a molecular weight above 20,000, the solvent should form a polymer having a molecular weight below 20,000 and vice versa. Catalysts, e.g. hydrogen, benzoyl and lauroyl peroxides and /or ultra-violet light may be used. In the example 10 parts of an unplasticized copolymer (90 per cent vinyl chloride and 10 per cent vinyl acetate) of molecular weight 16,000 are dissolved in 90 parts of warm methyl methacrylate and 1 part benzoyl peroxide added. Two sheets of plasticized polyvinyl chloride/acetate copolymer are coated with the solution, superposed and united by heating at 60 DEG C. under a pressure of 5 pounds per square inch to polymerize the monomer.
