Abstract

Copolymers of ethylene and alpha-beta ethylenically unsaturated acids having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms per molecule, containing 0.1 to 10% by weight of said acid and having a melt index of 0.01 to 30g/10 min. are prepared by continuously charging ethylene, the acid and a free radical initiator into a reaction zone maintained at a pressure of at least 1000 atmospheres and at a temperature of 90 to 280 DEG C., the ethylene and the acid being charged in a weight ratio of 10,000:1 to 100:2, and in relative proportions depending on their reactivities, converting from 3 to 20% of the ethylene into copolymer and continuously removing the copolymer from the reaction zone. Specified acid comonomers are acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric and itaconic acids and the methyl and ethyl hydrogen maleates and fumarates. Specified free radical initiators are oxygen; peroxides, e.g. benzoyl and lauryl peroxide and t-butyl peracetate; and azo-bis compounds, e.g. azo-bis (isobutyronitrile). The polymerization is preferably carried out in a stirred autoclave, the ethylene, the acid comonomer and the initiator being dissolved in solvents, e.g. ethylene, benzene, before injection into the autoclave. The copolymers can be used to coat cardboard, paper, metal foil, plastic films such as ethylene terephthalate films and other surfaces. They can be used as adhesives, e.g. binders for fibres, and they can be used as laminating resins.
