Abstract

Copolymers are produced by simultaneously bringing an olefinically unsaturated monomer, e.g. styrene, and maleic anhydride, which may be halogenated, in 1:2 to 2:1 molar proportions and a free-radical catalyst into contact with a solvent which has been preheated to the desired polymerization temperature and which is a solvent for both the monomers and the copolymer, the copolymer having a solution viscosity in 10% acetone solution of up to 7 centistokes. The solvent may be methyl ethyl ketone optionally with cumene or acetone. The catalyst may be benzoyl peroxide, hydrogen peroxide or dicumyl peroxide together with an activator, e.g. N,N-dimethyl aniline. The solvent may be preheated to 150-250 DEG C. and may contain less than 3% of unreacted monomers. The monomers and catalyst may be dissolved in a solvent to form a feed solution which is fed to the pre-heated solvent.
