Abstract

A process for the production of polymers of methyl methacrylate or copolymers thereof with aromatic vinyl hydrocarbons comprises (1) heating methyl methacrylate or a mixture thereof with up to 50% by weight of an aromatic vinyl hydrocarbon in the presence of free radicals at 50 DEG to 90 DEG C. until at least 20% of the monomeric material has undergone conversion by both polymerization, (2) controlling the temperature of the polymerizing mass to ensure that the temperature does not exceed 160 DEG C. until the exothermic action has subsided and (3) completing the polymerization at a temperature between 115-160 DEG C. The usual free radical initiators are used. After the first stage the reaction mass may be transferred to another vessel, or series of vessels which all have cooling means. Chain transfer agents may be employed.
