Abstract

In the aqueous suspension polymerization of monomeric vinyl compounds, e.g. styrene and methyl methacrylate, using 0.05 to 1.5 per cent (based on monomer) of insoluble pulverulent inorganic compounds such as barium sulphate and tricalcium phosphate, and monomersoluble catalysts, 0.0001 to 0.1 per cent (based on monomer) of a silicone oil is present. The silicone oils are organopolysiloxanes and organohydroxysiloxanes of the formula MDxM, where M is a monofunctional chain member, e.g. (CH3)3Siconnected through an oxygen atom, D a difunctional chain member, e.g. -Si(CH3)2- connected through two oxygen atoms, and x is 50 to 500. Suitable catalysts are benzoyl, lauroyl and di-t-butyl peroxides, cumene hydroperoxides and azo-di-isobutyronitrile or mixtures. Polymerization may be carried out at 50-130 DEG C at a pH between 5 and 9. The granular product has a relatively uniform grain size.
