Abstract
Ethylene and 0.1 to 5 weight per cent, based on the ethylene, of hydroxyethyl methacrylate are copolymerized at a temperature between 250 DEG and 500 DEG F. and at a pressure between 17,000 and 30,000 p.s.i. in the presence of a copolymerization catalyst. Catalysts exemplified are t-butyl perpivalate and t-butyl perbenzoate; others specified are t-butyl peracetate and t-butyl peroxide. The polymerization may be effected in the usual inert solvents or diluents and in the presence of the usual chain transfer agents and, of a number that are listed, kerosine and cyclohexane respectively are exemplified. Antioxidants may be used in the polymerization mixture. The copolymer may be used for making films, for coating various articles especially after blending with waxes, and it may also be moulded.
