Abstract

Wax-like ethylene polymers of low molecular weight are prepared by polymerizing ethylene at 100 DEG to 200 DEG C. and greater than 500 atmospheres in the presence of oxygen and/or a free radical forming initiator, 5 to 30 volume per cent of hydrogen and 0.5 to 12 volume per cent of one or more chain transfer agents. Specified initiators are di-t.-butyl peroxide, dibenzoyl peroxide, dilauroyl peroxide, isovaleroyl peroxide, t.-butyl perbenzoate, azodiisobutyronitrile and 2,21-dicyanazo benzole. Specified chain transfer agents are olefins, paraffins, chlorinated hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones. The products may be used in the manufacture of inks, polishes, candles, sealing compounds, anti-corrosion agents and textile finishes, and in the paper industry. In examples ethylene is polymerized in the presence of hydrogen and ethane and/or propane and or oxygen mixtures of dilauroyl peroxide and di-t.-butyl peroxide or of t.-butyl perbenzoate and di-t.-butyl peroxide dissolved in paraffin oil.
