Abstract

Ethylene is polymerized in a tubular reactor at a pressure of at least 20,000 p.s.i. in the presence of a chain transfer agent having a sufficiently high degree of activity for it to be used up at such a rate that its concentration decreases with respect to ethylene as the polymerization proceeds. Specified chain transfer agents are numerous mercaptans, in particular butyl or dodecyl mercaptan, trimethylsilane and diphenylphosphine. Optional ingredients are other monomers (propylene, butylene, styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, methyl acrylate or methacrylate, or acrylonitrile), polymerization modifiers of low degree of activity (hydrocarbons, aldehydes, alcohols, acetone, hydrogen, carbon dioxide or a phenolic compound), and free-radical catalysts.
