Abstract

Copolymers are prepared by polymerizing a mixture of a major amount, on a molar basis, of ar-chloromethyl styrene and a polyvinyl aromatic hydrocarbon. Divinyl-benzene, xylene, ethylbenzene, ethyltoluene or trivinylbenzene may be used as cross-linking agent. Up to 10 per cent of styrene, vinyl toluene or xylene, a -methyl styrene, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, methyl isopropenyl ketone or vinyl chloride may be included in the mixture. The copolymers may be prepared en masse or in suspension in glycerine, water or brine, containing methyl cellulose (Example (1)), bentonite, a diethanolamine-adipic acid condensation product and an ethylene oxide-ureaformaldehyde condensation product (Example (2)), using catalysts such as acetyl, benzoyl, lauroyl, stearyl and di-t-butyl peroxides and di-t-butyl diperphthalate, t-butyl perbenzoate and cumene hydroperoxide. The copolymers may be aminated to form anion-exchange resins by suspending in liquid ammonia or amines such as methyl, ethyl, butyl, dimethyl, diethyl, dipropyl, trimethyl, triethyl, tributyl amines, ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, dimethylethanolamine, methyldiethanolamine, dimethylisopropanolamine, methyldiisopropanolamine, benzyldimethylamine, diethylcyclohexylamine, preferably after swelling in liquids such as benzene, toluene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, methylene chloride or perchlorethylene or by adding the aminating agent to the copolymer in suspension in water, benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene or perchloroethylene.
