Abstract

A polymeric product comprising (a) a major proportion of isotactic polypropylene and (b) a minor proportion of a copolymer of propylene and at least one olefin, other than propylene, having four or less carbon atoms, and in which at least part of the copolymer is grafted on to the polypropylene, is made by feeding into a vessel containing propylene monomer and a catalyst, the olefin, other than propylene, before, during, or after propylene homopolymerization takes place in the vessel. The catalyst must be capable of polymerizing propylene and the other monomer at sufficiently similar rates of reaction to form a copolymer, and also to polymerize propylene to isotactic polypropylene. Catalysts used are of the "low-pressure" type. Exemplified catalysts are TiCl3 + Al(C2H5)2Cl, TiCl3 + Al(C2H5)3, and VOCl3 + Al(C2H5)2Cl. Hydrogen may be present during the reaction. The olefin may be added intermittently, and the reaction is preferably effected in a hydrocarbon diluent. The olefin may be ethylene or n-butene-1. The graft copolymer is recovered by conventional techniques.
