Abstract

1,233,106. Preparation and mechanical working of propylene-ethylene block copolymers. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 27 Sept., 1968 [29 Sept., 1967], No. 46125/68. Heading C3P. A continuous process for the production of a block copolymer comprises (a) polymerizing propylene in bulk in the presence of a catalyst in a first zone, (b) feeding the partially polymerized mixture to a second zone, (c) adding ethylene to the mixture in the second zone, and optionally further propylene, and continuing the polymerization, (d) recovering the solid copolymer, and (e) mechanically working the copolymer at a work input of at least 0À25 horse-power per hour per pound of copolymer. The product is essentially propylene-b-[ethylene-copropylene]. The polymerization is suitably carried out using a Ziegler catalyst and hydrogen. Mechanical working may be achieved by conventional Banbury mixers or extruders. A polyethylene may be included prior to or during the working. The polymer may be recovered by treatment with a diketone, e.g. acetylacetone, -propylene oxide mixture, washing, and drying, prior to mechanical working. In the examples the catalyst employed is (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl-TiCl 3 obtained by reducing TiCl 4 with Al. A flow diagram of a suitable continuous operation is included.
