Abstract

Graft polymers are prepared by treating with a redox polymerization catalyst a dispersion of a long-chain organic material containing carbon-hydrogen bonds such that active centres are induced in the trunk of the material, and then introducing an addition-polymerizable monomer which polymerizes on to the active centres to form branches. Long-chain materials specified are polymers of ethylene, propylene, styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, butadiene and isoprene and copolymers thereof, e.g. styrene-butadiene copolymers, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyethylene terephthalate, paraffin wax, proteins and natural rubber. Monomers specified are styrene, butadiene, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate. Redox catalysts specified are mixtures tert. butyl hydroperoxide and a polyamine, potassium bisulphite and a bisulphite or a thiosulphate and hydrogen peroxide, fructose and ferrous pyrophosphate. The polymerization medium is preferably water containing a dispersing agent.
