Abstract

Impact-resistant thermoplastic materials are made by polymerizing a monoalkyl aromatic monomer, acrylonitrile and natural rubber or a diene synthetic rubber in the presence of an unsaturated dimer of alpha-methylstyrene or a derivative of the preferred monoalkenyl aromatic monomer is styrene, but halogen and alkyl derivatives of styrene and mixtures thereof with styrene may also be used. Synthetic rubbers specified are emulsion polymerized and cis-1,4-polybutadienes, butadienestyrene and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers and isoprene polymers. The polymerization may be carried out in bulk, in aqueous emulsion or suspension, or in a two-stage process with prepolymerization in bulk followed by polymerization in aqueous suspension. Polymerization is initiated by peroxide, azo or redox catalysts.
