Abstract
Transparent polymeric moulding materials are made by polymerizing methyl methacrylate and a vinyl aromatic compound with 3 to 15%, based on monomer weight, of a linear rubber, e.g. cis-1,4-polybutadiene, linear polycyclopentadiene, linear polyisoprene, linear copolymers of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile or isobutylene and linear block copolymers of styrene with butadiene and isoprene. The vinyl aromatic monomers is preferably styrene, which may be replaced wholly or in part by alpha-methylstyrene, or styrenes substituted in the nucleus by chlorine or alkyl groups. Also present in the monomer mixture may be 3 to 10% by weight of acrylonitrile. Polymerization is carried out by dissolving the linear rubber in the monomer mixture, polymerizing the resulting solution to 10 to 45% conversion, then suspending the prepolymer in water and completing the polymerization. Polymerization is initiated by the use of monomer-soluble catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide in the bulk polymerization stage and tert.-butyl perbenzoate in the suspension stage. The aqueous medium in the suspension stage contains a small quantity of suspending agent, e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose.
