1,054,301. Impact-resistant polymers. DISTRENE Ltd. March 23, 1964 [March 23, 1963], No. 11606/63. Heading C3G. Toughened polymers and copolymers of vinyl aromatic compounds are made by agitating a solution of rubber in vinyl aromatic compound with water and a suspending agent to form a suspension while allowing polymerization to take place, the agitation during the initial polymerization being such that it would be insufficient to maintain the suspension in a stable state throughout the polymerization. Vinyl aromatic compounds specified are styrene and its methyl, ethyl and chlorine derivatives, which may be used in admixture with methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, alpha-methylstyrene, vinyl esters and acrylic esters. Rubbers specified are polybutadiene and copolymers of butadiene with styrene and acrylonitrile. The examples describe polymerizing styrene and a mixture thereof with methyl methacrylate containing dissolved polybutadiene, mineral oil, alpha-methylstyrene dimer and tert.-butyl peroxide in an aqueous medium containing polyvinyl alcohol and dihexyl sodium sulphosuccinate.
