Abstract
Unsaturated compounds containing a CH2= C< group in the molecule are polymerized in suspension in an aqueous medium with the use of a substantially neutral calcium oxalate as a suspension stabilizer. Unsaturated compounds specified are methyl methacrylate and styrene, which latter may be copolymerized with a minor proportion of another unsaturated compound containing a CH2=C< group such as acrylonitrile or divinyl benzene; the divinyl benzene used may be in the form of a concentrate containing a substantial proportion of ethyl vinyl benzene, and also containing tert. butyl catecohol as an inhibitor. The process may also be applied to the production of high impact strength polystyrene by polymerizing styrene which contains a minor proportion of a natural or synthetic rubber dissolved therein. Polymerization is preferably carried out in the presence of a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide or tert. butyl perbenzoate, and the aqueous medium may contain gelatin in addition to the calcium oxalate dispersing agent. The polymerization products are in the form of hard beads.
