Abstract

Polyvinyl chloride compositions of high impact strenght may be prepared by mixing suspension polymerized polyvinyl chloride with an intimate mixture of an emulsion polymerized polyvinyl chloride and an emulsion polymerized terpolymer of 50 to 75% by weight of butadiene, 20 to 30% by weight of styrene and 5 to 30% by weight of acrylonitrile, said terpolymer constituting 1 to 50 weight per cent of the composition. The suspension polyvinyl chloride may be prepared by polymerizing vinyl chloride in aqueous suspension in the presence of lauroyl peroxide or azobisisobutyronitrile as catalyst and polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose, starch or gelatin as suspending agent. The terpolymer may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomers, optionally together with up to 3% by weight of a cross-linking agent such as divinyl benzene, in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, ammonium persulphate, potassium persulphate, cumene hydroperoxide or p-menthane hydroperoxide, and emulsifiers, e.g. soaps, alkyl sulphates, hydrocarbon sulphonates, fatty acid monoglycerides and polyethylene glycol ethers. The vinyl chloride polymer emulsion may be prepared by polymerizing vinyl chloride in the presence of similar catalysts and emulsifiers. The emulsions may be mixed and coagulated, e.g. with sodium chloride or aluminium sulphate, and the coagulate dried and blended with the suspension polyvinyl chloride. Alternatively the emulsions may be spray dried with or without prior mixing thereof, and the dried product then incorporated in the suspension polymer.
