Abstract

Ethylenically unsaturated substances are polymerized or copolymerized in an aqueous emulsion containing a polymerization catalyst, preferably a peroxy catalyst such as potassium persulphate or benzoyl peroxide, and as emulsifying agent a colloidal solution of silica, preferably in conjunction with another emulsifying agent, the colloidal solution of silica being preferably used in an amount sufficient to provide from 0.1 to 5 per cent by weight of silica based on the weight of the ethylenically unsaturated substances. The silica is preferably added to the aqueous emulsion in aqueous colloidal solution. The ethylenically unsaturated substances may be vinyl compounds or mixtures of vinyl compounds with other ethylenically unsaturated substances, the process being particularly applicable to the preparation of polystyrene, and of interpolymers of styrene with isoprene, butadiene, fumaronitrile and ethyl acrylate. The added emulsifying agent may be a salt of an alkylated aromatic sulphonic acid or a sulphated fatty alcohol.
