Abstract
Discrete, spherical beads are produced by vigorously agitating a monomer in a non-solvent liquid, particularly water, in the presence of a dispersing agent and a catalyst, stopping the agitation before any appreciable polymerization has taken place and permitting the polymerization to be completed while the mixture remains in a quiescent state. Monomers specified are styrene and/or methyl methacrylate, vinyl pyridine and mixtures of methyl methacrylate with divinyl benzene or diethylene glycol diallyl dicarbonate. The dispersing agent may be the sodium salts of N-oleyl-N-methyl taurine, 2-ethyl-2-methylundecanol-4-sulphate, N-lauroyl-N-N-methyl taurine and lauryl sulphate; the dioctyl ester of sodium sulphosuccinic acid, N-octadecyl tetrasodium (1 : 2-dicarboxyl ethyl sulphosuccinamate), diglycerol monolaurate, lauryl ether of polyethylene glycol, cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, mixtures of the above or starch. Catalysts specified are benzoyl, tetrahydronaphthalene, methyl ethyl ketone and hydrogen peroxides, cumene and t-butyl hydroperoxides and N-(a -azo-bis-isobutyronitrile). The polymerization may be carried out in an inert atmosphere and the temperature may be between 30 DEG and 75 DEG C. Beads of size 1 to 200 microns are obtained, the actual size being mainly controlled by the amount and nature of the dispersing agent used.
