Abstract

In the pearl polymerization of styrene compounds, e.g styrene, chlorostyrenes, methyl and dimethyl styrenes and divinyl benzenes, alone or with copolymerizable monomers such as butadiene, a -methyl styrene, methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile, finely divided calcium or strontium fluoride is used as suspension stabilizer. The aqueous suspension is agitated and heated, preferably at 60-160 DEG C. with a catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, at a pH of 5 to 9 and with a monomer-water ratio within the range 1 : 1 to 1 : 10. The calcium or strontium fluoride is present in an amount less than 5 per cent weight/volume of the monomer, preferably 0.02 to 2 per cent. A surface-active agent, e.g. organic sulphates or sulphonates of alcohols or hydrocarbons, alkali sulphite addition products of neutral esters of unsaturated polycarboxylic acids, alkyl aromatic sulphonates and alkyl aryl polyether sulphonates may be present in not more than 10 per cent by weight of the stabilizer and in insufficient quantity to cause emulsification. The fluorides are preferably prepared by adding sodium fluoride to a solution of the chloride.
