Abstract

In a process for the pearl polymerization of one or more organic compounds containing the CH2=C< group, e.g. styrene, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile or mixtures thereof, in aqueous suspension, finely-divided particles of calcium phosphate having a CaO/P2O5 ratio of at least 1.35 are present as a suspension stabilizer. A catalyst soluble in the monomer, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, is normally present and the phosphate may be added during the polymerization. The pearls are finally washed with dilute acid, water and dried. Specification 638,572 is referred to.ALSO:Calcium phosphate, prepared by precipitation with (1) phosphoric acid from a hot, dilute, aqueous suspension of lime, or (2) tri-sodium phosphate from a hot, aqueous solution of calcium chloride maintained at a pH of 8-9 by addition of ammonia, or (3) by heating lime and water at 250 DEG C. with calcium phosphate, in an autoclave, is used as a stabilizer for the pearl polymerization of unsaturated organic compounds.
