Abstract

The process of the parent Specification for the polymerization in aqueous dispersion of vinyl and vinylidene chlorides and mixtures with or without minor amounts of other monomers, is modified by employing as the dispersing agent a partial ester of a polyglycerol having a maximum of ten hydroxy groups in the molecule with a fatty acid having 10 to 20 carbon atoms in the molecule. The fatty acid may be lauric, myristic, palmitic, or stearic acid or mixtures. Plasticizers, e.g. tri-xylenyl phosphate and tri-butyl citrate may be added to the polymerizable dispersion.ALSO:A partial ester of a polyglycerol having a maximum of 10 hydroxy groups in the molecule with a fatty acid having 10 to 20 carbon atoms in the molecule is made by heating glycerol at 230-300 DEG C. in the presence of an alkaline or acidic catalyst and when the desired amount of water has been removed adding the chosen fatty acid and recovering the partial ester when esterification is complete. The fatty acid may be lauric, myristic, palmitic, or stearic acid or mixtures.
