Abstract

Hydrolysed polyacrylonitrile, polymethacrylonitrile, or copolymers of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile with another monomer are made by suspending the finely divided polymer in a mixture of water and 50 to 95 per cent of an alcohol having the general formula: HO-CnH2n-(OCmH2m)x-H in which m and n are integers from one to four inclusive and x=0, 1, 2 or 3, and heating the suspension to a temperature above 40 DEG C. in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide. Other monomers mentioned are styrene, alpha-methylstyrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloroacetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters, and maleic and fumaric acid and esters. Specified alcohols are methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl methoxyethyl, ethoxyethyl, butoxyethyl and ethoxymethyl. The hydrolysed polymers are used as soil-conditioning agents.
