Abstract

Aqueous sols having a pH of from 4.5 to 11 and which give a thermoreversible gel on cooling comprise as principal ingredients copolymers composed to the extent of at least 60 per cent by weight of the product obtained or obtainable by the copolymerization of the monomers: CH2=CR-COOH and CH2=CR1-CN wherein R and R1 each represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a lower alkyl group, in a molecular ratio of the second to the first monomer within the range of 1.5:1 and 3:1. Also present in the copolymers may be units derived from other monomers, e.g. acrylamide, vinyl acetate and styrene. The copolymers may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomers in a liquid medium such as ethyl alcohol or, preferably, an aqueous medium having a pH of about 3 with the aid of a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide, a mixture of potassium persulphate and sodium metabisulphite or a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ferrous chloride. In an Example (6) a copolymer of acrylic acid and acrylonitrile is prepared by a procedure in which the acrylonitrile is not added to the reaction until the acrylic acid has been polymerizing for 1 hour. Alternatively, the copolymers may be prepared by the partial hydrolysis of polyacrylonitrile of polyacrylonitrile with aqueous caustic soda followed by precipitation in acid form by means of hydrochloric acid. Aqueous sols are made by dissolving the copolymers in water with the aid of ammonia or caustic soda. The sols may be used in the preparation of photographic layers for which purpose the copolymer may be replaced in part by gelatin or phthalyl gelatin. Specification 649,544, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.
